Photo booths are becoming ubiquitous these days and it’s not hard to see why. You get a photo of almost every person at your wedding (a difficult feat for even the most conscientious wedding photographer), and they’re a ton of fun for you and your guests. What’s not to like?
But as photo booths have become more popular, the number of photo booth rental companies has exploded. So how do you find the photo booth that’s right for your wedding when there are so many options out there?
Here are five questions to help you narrow down your search and have a great photo booth experience at your wedding.
1. Color or black-and-white?
Color has become the de-facto standard for photographs these days, but it wasn’t always the case. In fact, the original photo booths took only black-and-white photos (on film!) and many people find the high-contrast black-and-white vintage look of classic photo booth images more flattering than color. Whatever your preference, look for a photo booth that specializes in the type of photos you prefer.
2. To prop or not to prop?
Many photo booth companies rent or sell a box of props to use with their booths. Many clients appreciate the convenience of having a box of props to use in their photos but keep in mind that the more giant sunglasses, moustaches-on-sticks, and feather boas are brought into the booth, the less of your guests’ faces you’ll see in the photos. Props can be fun, but it’s also fun to see what people do in the booth with nothing but their own imagination.
3. Behind closed doors or open air?
The term “photo booth” has become a bit ambiguous these days. Some photo booths are actual booths with doors or curtains for privacy. Others eschew the booth, using just a camera, backdrop, and lights but no walls. Each type has its own advantages. The open air booth can usually accommodate more people at once, but the closed booth is more private which can encourage people to be more adventurous in their photos.
4. What about the extras?
These days the photo booth experience doesn’t end with the printout you get when you leave the booth. Photo booth companies are doing all sorts of fun and interesting things with the photos after the fact. Some companies allow you to order full size prints of individual photos from an online gallery. Others offer flipbooks or time-lapse videos of your photo booth images. These extras can be a great way to re-live the fun of your wedding day and see what your friends were up to in the booth while you weren’t looking.
5. How do the photos look?
It’s the most important aspect of any photo booth, and yet it’s the one that seems like an afterthought in many cases. The quality of photo booth images varies greatly from booth to booth. Look carefully at the individual photo samples on any photo booth company’s website. If they look like they were taken with a cell-phone or a point-and-shoot camera then that’s what your photos will look like too. Photo booth pictures can truly be works of art but only if the booth was built from the ground up with top-quality equipment and thoughtful lighting design. Be careful to ensure quality before you make a payment.
Best of luck with all your wedding plans and happy boothing!

Of course, I love taking posed portraits and group photos as well, but my greatest strength is in documenting the real emotions and unscripted interactions that make each wedding unique.”
