This is a great question asked by Nearlywedd Blogger “HiLLjO”! “I would LOVE to hear your opinion on just how much direction from the bride/groom/families is too much. Of course we all have our lists of photos we NEED but how much is too much from your POV?”
The interesting thing about a wedding is…all of a sudden everyone thinks they’re a photographer. However, the fact is you hired a professional to photograph this momentous event. This means that you’ve checked out your photographer’s work, and you love it! So, you’re prepared to leave the picture taking and coordinating to your hired professional. Otherwise, you could have simply picked up anyone with a decent understanding of a camera, plan all of the pictures, shot locations, and posing yourself, and just tell that person when to hit the button.
Personally, I don’t mind taking a few suggestions here and there on the wedding day, but very minimal. After all, there’s a schedule to keep, and we can’t use up all our time taking suggestions from everyone. The list of pictures to be photographed, and most suggestions from the soon-to-be wedded couple, have already been discussed in advance during one of our consultations.
Now, if after the formals are complete, the mother/father of the bride or groom asks me or one of my staff to take a picture of them with someone, or near something, yeah, we’re going to do it. And obviously, if the bride and groom ask us to take their picture with someone,we’re going to do it. But for the most part, my team and I are going to do what we do best, our job…with the least amount of interference as possible.
Keep in mind, you hired your wedding photographer because you love their creativity, style, and the end result. Don’t mess up your pictures by trying to direct every aspect of photography. You already hired a Director of Photography!
